Brown or Discoloured Rainwater Tank Water — What Causes It and What to Do

Brown or tea-coloured rainwater tank water is most often caused by tannins — dissolved organic matter from leaf litter in your gutters and tank. On its own, tannin colouration is an aesthetic problem rather than a health one.

But it's rarely worth stopping there, and this is the part most people miss. The same organic matter that colours the water also acidifies it, and acidic rainwater with no mineral buffering is corrosive. That chemistry can dissolve lead, copper and zinc out of your own plumbing and fittings.‍ ‍

So the colour is usually harmless. What the colour indicates often isn't.

First: does it clear?

This is the most useful thing you can observe yourself, and it splits the problem in two.

If the water runs discoloured and then clears after thirty seconds or a few minutes of the tap or pump running, you're most likely looking at settled sediment being disturbed, or water that has been sitting in the pipework. Common when the tank is low and the outlet sits near the sludge layer, after heavy rain has stirred the tank, or first thing in the morning after the line has been standing overnight.

If the water is uniformly discoloured no matter how long it runs, the colour is dissolved rather than suspended. That points to tannins, iron or manganese, and it won't settle out or clear with flushing.

If it clears when left to stand in a glass — with particles settling to the bottom — it's suspended solids. If the whole glass stays evenly coloured, it's dissolved.

Those three observations narrow the field considerably before any testing.

The likely causes in more detail

Tannins and organic matter

Leaves, bark, seed pods and general roof litter break down in gutters and inside the tank. The resulting dissolved organic compounds tint the water anywhere from pale yellow to strong tea colour.

It's the most common cause of discoloured tank water in Australia, and it's most pronounced under trees, after long dry spells followed by heavy rain, in tanks that have never been desludged, and where the first-flush diverter is undersized, blocked or absent.

The ADWG addresses colour as an aesthetic parameter — it affects appearance and palatability rather than presenting a direct health risk at typical levels.

Iron

Iron produces orange to rust-red discolouration and stains fixtures, laundry and toilet cisterns. In tank water it usually comes from the tank system itself: steel roofing, galvanised gutters, corroding fittings, or steel plumbing. It's less commonly from the rain.

The ADWG aesthetic guideline for iron is 0.3 mg/L. There's no health-based value.

Manganese

Darker than iron, often near-black, and it deposits as a slick or film inside kettles, cisterns and pipework. Less common in tank water than in bore water, but it occurs.

Manganese has both aesthetic and health-based guideline values, and they sit unusually close together — a point worth noting if you find it, because with most parameters staining appears long before anything health-relevant.

Disturbed sediment and sludge

Every tank accumulates a sludge layer: fine sediment, decomposed organic matter, and whatever the roof delivers. It's normally undisturbed at the base, below the outlet.

It gets stirred up when the tank runs low, when heavy inflow agitates the water column, when the pump draws close to the floor, or during works. This is the classic pattern behind water that runs dirty then clears — and it's a maintenance issue rather than a water quality one, though what's in the sludge is worth knowing about.

First-flush diverter problems

The first flush off a roof carries the highest load of dust, droppings and debris. A diverter that's blocked, undersized, or has a jammed float lets that straight into the tank.

If your water discolours specifically after rain, the diverter is the first thing to check.

The part that actually matters

Here's why discolouration is worth testing rather than just filtering or ignoring.

Rainwater is naturally soft and slightly acidic — it has almost no dissolved minerals, and therefore almost no alkalinity, which is the water's capacity to resist changes in pH. Add organic acids from decomposing leaf litter and the pH drops further, with nothing to buffer it.

Soft, acidic, unbuffered water is corrosive. It dissolves metal on contact — a property called plumbosolvency — and it will draw lead, copper and zinc out of solder joints, brass fittings, flashing and pipework.

A real result from an anonymised tank analysis shows how the chain runs:

  • Apparent colour 30 HU — significant organic load from the catchment

  • pH 5.6 — well below the guideline range, driven down by organic acids

  • No meaningful alkalinity — nothing buffering it

  • Lead 0.018 mg/L — 3.6 times the ADWG health guideline value of 0.005 mg/L, and zinc 2.8 mg/L

The lead wasn't in the rain. It came out of the plumbing, mobilised by the chemistry the leaf litter created.

That matters because it changes the fix. Correct the pH and the metals come down with it. Read the lead result on its own and the obvious response — replace the plumbing — is expensive and may not be necessary.

Colour is the visible symptom. The metals are the consequence. You can't see the connection without measuring both.

What to test

To answer both questions — what's causing the colour, and whether it's mobilising anything — the panel needs:

  • Apparent colour, to quantify the organic load rather than eyeball it

  • pH and alkalinity, to establish whether the water is corrosive

  • Hardness, EC and TDS, for the mineral balance

  • Iron and manganese, to distinguish organic colour from metallic colour

  • Lead, copper and zinc, to see whether corrosion is actually leaching anything

  • E. coli and thermotolerant coliforms, because the catchment pathway delivering leaf litter also delivers droppings

  • Turbidity, for the suspended fractio

What to do while you wait

Regardless of the result, these are worth doing:

  • Clean gutters and remove overhanging branches where practical — it's the source of the organic load

  • Check the first-flush diverter — that it's clear, correctly sized, and the float isn't jammed

  • Inspect the tank inlet screen for gaps letting debris, insects or vermin in

  • Consider desludging if the tank has never been cleaned, particularly if it's more than ten years old

  • Check the outlet height relative to the tank floor — an outlet sitting too low will draw sludge as levels fall

None of these change the water chemistry already in the tank, but they address the input.

Frequently asked questions

Is brown rainwater tank water safe to drink? Tannin colouration is an aesthetic issue rather than a direct health risk at typical levels. But discoloured water frequently accompanies low pH and low alkalinity, which can mobilise lead and copper from plumbing — and that is a health-relevant issue. The colour itself is usually harmless; what it indicates may not be.

Why does my tank water clear after running the tap? That pattern points to settled sediment being disturbed, or water that has been standing in the pipework. Dissolved causes like tannins, iron and manganese won't clear with running.

Will a filter fix brown tank water? Depending on the cause, some will. But filtering treats the appearance, not the corrosivity underneath — and if low pH is mobilising metals from your plumbing, a sediment or carbon filter won't address it. Test first so you know what you're treating and have a number to compare against afterwards.

Does boiling help? No. Boiling addresses microbiological contamination. It does nothing for colour, tannins or metals, and evaporation concentrates dissolved metals rather than removing them.

Why did my water go brown after heavy rain? Usually first-flush diversion failing to keep the initial dirty runoff out, or heavy inflow stirring up the tank's sludge layer. Check the diverter first.

Can I just ignore it if it doesn't taste bad? The colour, yes. The chemistry, not necessarily — corrosive water can be leaching metals well before anything is detectable by taste. A single test settles it.
